The Aia del Venti picnic area is located along the Strada Provinciale Aiole, not far from Prato le Macinaie. Near the Hotel Gatto d'Oro you can easily spot large parking areas where you can leave the car.
This picnic area has about 5 tables with large benches and 4 barbecue spots for lighting a fire. The place is not particularly panoramic, but it is certainly a cool spot to take refuge from the summer heat.
A useful stopping point for those who intend to visit the woods and the vast beech woods of Monte Amiata.
We didn't find any water, so those who intend to stay for a whole day had better bring all the water they need to quench their thirst.

For somewhere to sleep in the area see the Albergo Le Macinaie on Monte Amiata.

What to know before you go

  • When: the best season is summer, when the shade of the beech woods offers shelter from the heat.
  • Facilities: five tables with benches and barbecue spots; before lighting a fire, check that no bans are in force because of the fire risk.
  • Water: there isn't any, you have to bring it all from home.
  • Getting there: from Arezzo you leave the motorway at Valdichiana and head up towards Abbadia San Salvatore; from Rome you follow the Cassia as far as Ponte a Rigo and go through Piancastagnaio. Either way you go past Prato le Macinaie and follow the signs for Aiole.

If you want to walk before lunch, you can set off from Prato le Macinaie for the hike to the summit of Monte Amiata.
