Encyclopaedic definition

Altopiano In physical geography, an altipiano (plateau) is a vast area of flat or gently undulating land, bounded by surrounding heights or mountains, lying at an altitude significantly higher than the plain below. Plateaus form through various geological processes, such as erosion, the uplift of the land or tectonic activity. These regions may or may not be inhabited and can host a variety of ecosystems, depending on climate, altitude and environmental conditions. Plateaus are often important for farming and grazing, and they can also attract tourism thanks to their natural beauty and their mild climate.
