Climbing at Gaeta...

Redazione 30/05/2012 Reads: 1

Always superbly structured, the guides from the publisher Versante Sud offer a substantial number of routes and climbing lines.

The format, although already seen in other books in the same series, has its own particular features. In this excellent guide much more space has been given to describing the geographical areas involved. A lot of space has also been given to describing the individual routes. The photographs are large and carefully chosen.

We find it extremely interesting that the lines are drawn not only on stylised images of the faces but also directly on the photographs. 5 wonderful crags south of Rome, 3 authors with a great wealth of experience, a publisher specialised in climbing: the only possible result was an excellent climbing guide to southern Lazio.

The only slight shortcoming is the absence of a legend for quick reference, as Versante Sud had got us used to in the past.

All in all a truly remarkable sport climbing guide...

From the back cover:

"The highest concentration of mountaineering routes (multi-pitch routes) in Lazio is found in the area between Gaeta and the Circeo: on 18 kilometres of coast there are to this day 192 multi-pitch routes, adding up to almost 20,000 metres of climbing. This is a guide dedicated to all those who love going beyond the single pitch, but it is also an invitation to look up from the usual top-rope and discover long routes and different emotions. A particular effort has been devoted to the "historical restoration" of some routes that over the course of time had literally been wiped out. All the routes with at least two pitches have been included, recording all the long routes that have historically followed one another on these walls."
