Encyclopaedia (from the point of view of mountaineering and climbing):
Fix o Spit Fix In mountaineering and climbing, the term "fix" or "spit fix" refers to a type of permanent anchor used to protect sport climbing routes. These anchors usually consist of metal studs, pitons or plates, which are fixed into the rock with epoxy resin or cement. Placing fixes is a delicate operation that requires careful planning and a thorough knowledge of anchoring techniques and of the characteristics of the rock. Fixes are placed along climbing routes to protect climbers during their ascent, allowing them to clip the rope to the anchors to safeguard themselves against a fall. These anchors are particularly important on crags and rock faces equipped for sport climbing, where they offer climbers reliable, consistent protection points along the route. However, the placing and responsible use of fixes raise questions of ethics and environmental impact, since the indiscriminate placing of fixes can damage the rock and alter the natural experience of climbing. Mountaineers and climbers are therefore encouraged to use fixes responsibly and to adhere to the principles of climbing ethics, respecting the natural environment and preserving the integrity of rock faces.
Fact sheet
- Definition
A fix (also called a “Spit fix”) is a type of expansion bolt made by the same manufacturer as spits. To place a fix in the rock face you must use a drill, in fact fixes are usually longer than spits and need much more force to drive in.
The difference between spit and fix lies in the fact that the fix has the expansion cone fixed directly onto the bolt, which goes in all in one piece. The last fixing step is to fit a hanger with a ring and a nut. Once everything is tightened, the fix stays permanently anchored to the face.
