L'altro Sentiero no. 5 - January 2012

Redazione 30/05/2012 Reads: 1

Società Editrice Ricerche is carrying out a very interesting project, the "Escursionismo Appenninico Alternativo" (alternative Apennine hiking) series. It is a series put together with simplicity but with the technical rigour typical of this well-known publisher.

The hikes proposed in no. 5 of this six-monthly series are interesting, new and tempting; they range from the most classic Monte Vettore to Monte Capanne on the island of Elba. The information in the appendix on where to eat and where to sleep is useful. The price is fair considering the quality of the descriptions and the completeness of the information.

Contents of the booklet:

  1. Monte Solenne from Ferentillo (Umbria-Marche Apennines)
  2. Colle delle Monache from Nerito (Gran Sasso group)
  3. Monte Capanne from Monte Perone (island Apennines of the Tuscan Archipelago)
  4. Monte Matanna from the Albergo Alto Matanna (Alpi Apuane)
  5. Monte Catria from Chiaserna (Marche Apennines)
  6. Monte Morrone from Corvaro (Monti della Duchessa Reserve)
  7. Fiumara del Saraceno from Alessandria del Carretto (Ionian coast)
  8. Monte San Nicola and Monte Campo from Guado della Liscia (Molise Apennines)
  9. Monte Vettore from the Colle di Montegallo (Marche Apennines)
  10. Monte Cagno and Monte Ocre from Rocca di Cambio (Monte Velino group)

What it contains and who it is for

The issue collects routes scattered along the whole peninsula: from the Alpi Apuane to the Tuscan Archipelago, from the Gran Sasso to the Molise Apennines and down to the Ionian coast, with several hikes in the central Apennines such as Monte Catria, the Vettore, Monte Morrone della Duchessa and Monte Cagno in the Velino group. It suits hikers who already know the classic destinations and are looking for less-trodden approaches, and those organising a weekend away from their usual area thanks to the appendix on where to eat and sleep.

It is a handy booklet, with colour photos, published by Edizioni SER in 2012: the availability and price of back issues should be checked before buying. Two of the destinations are also described on our site: Monte Cagno by the Forcamiccia and Monte Morrone by the Fonte della Vena.
