Millet's Dual JKT Soft Shell technical jacket is a versatile shell (soft shell) for both winter and summer.
I was able to test the jacket both in winter conditions and in summer conditions, and it gave remarkable results. The jacket gives excellent protection against the wind and also controls damp and breathability.
Looking at the jacket, we notice a great many finishing touches. The inner seams are finished with a double layer of fabric to reduce wind getting in.
We have three zips: one at the front and two very long vents to let sweat escape during intense physical activity.
The zips are finished with little pull cords that make the zips very easy to handle even with gloves on.
The fabrics used for this jacket are: M-Wind, a nylon fabric, for the inner layer, and 100% polyester for the outer covering.
The jacket weighs about 600 g.
It must also be admitted that the fit of the jacket is truly excellent.
The pockets, comfortable and very roomy, also have zips to keep your personal belongings safe.
At the wrists there are elastic cuffs, not too tight, which still let you push the sleeves up along the forearm.
In short, a really excellent jacket with truly excellent finishing. It fully meets the needs of the mountaineer as well as the hiker.
I found the jacket at an affordable price both in shops and directly online. The price range runs from a maximum of 150 euros to a minimum of 89 euros.
Who it suits and how to use it
The Dual JKT is designed for those who walk or climb at a steady pace and want a single garment against wind and cold that can let sweat out. The long vents make it useful on hard climbs, while the pull cords on the zips will be appreciated by anyone who has to open and close it without taking their gloves off.
As a rule a soft shell is not fully waterproof: in driving rain it doesn't replace a proper shell, which is worth keeping in your rucksack anyway. In winter it works well as an outer layer over a fleece or a thermal top. The prices given in the test date from the time we tried it: check them before buying.
