Introduction: A classic climb that starts from Rifugio Sebastiani. The climb to Monte Terminillo by the Normal Route is a hike that is not very tiring but that can give the hiker full satisfaction. A few extra precautions during the winter months, when the snow cover calls for the use of crampons and ice axe.

Route features A perfectly obvious route that runs along the east ridge of the Terminillo among small rocks and little, barely exposed passages.

From the same hut the easy hike to Monte Elefante also starts.

Route description

Having left the car at Rifugio Sebastiani, you pick out a small valley right below the hut, to the south (use your compass). You go down the small valley and climb back out of it towards the (very obvious) east ridge of Monte Terminillo. On the crest of grass and rocks you immediately find the traces of path (already visible from the hut) that climb in zigzags. The path keeps to the ridge line on its southern side. You carry on easily, following the traces of path all the way to the summit. The path is very intuitive and easy to walk, although in places it is covered with small rocks, stones and fine gravel.
During the winter months (depending on the snow cover) the path is no longer easy to pick out. Always keep to the south-facing side of the ridge.
The descent is by the same route.

Variants and alternatives

Two descent variants should be pointed out to hikers.

Option 1: the descent by the Valle del Sole, a wide valley to the south of the summit of the Terminillo.
You go down the ridge line that drops towards the Terminilletto until you reach the lowest point, then you carefully slip down into the combe. This descent route is particularly quick to go down when there is a lot of snow, and it lets us reach the road that leads to Rifugio Sebastiani.

Option 2: the descent by the north-facing valley is more demanding and requires a somewhat more complex round. You go down the west ridge towards the nearby Vetta Sassetelli. Before turning off along the ridge you slip down into the slope that leads to the valley floor; here you keep right, skirting round the foot of the northern shoulder of Monte Terminillo. You pass at the foot of the Via Chiaretti Pietrostefani, then walk along the foot of the Terminillo as far as the hut.

Notes on effort and difficulty

Little physical effort, and the hike is easy to do during the summer months, when it can be within reach of young hikers too. More demanding during the winter months, when the route can be more exposed to hazards.

Visitor centres and accommodation

At Rifugio Sebastiani you can eat almost all year round, except for the periods when the road stays practically closed because of too much snow.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the normal route to Monte Terminillo start?

From Rifugio Sebastiani, where you leave the car. You drop into a small valley to the south and climb back up to the east ridge, following the zigzag traces of path to the summit: about 3 km, 410 metres of height gain and 2 hours 30 minutes, graded E+ (CAI scale: E = hiking path, the + marks the upper end of the grade).

Can you climb Monte Terminillo by the normal route in winter?

Yes, but the route becomes more demanding and more exposed to hazards: with snow cover you need crampons and an ice axe. Rifugio Sebastiani is open almost all year round, except when the road stays closed because of too much snow.
