Psycho Vertical by Andy Kirkpatrick

Good, good, good.... what more can you say about a book that is well written, and even better thought out? But above all written in a gripping way, a quality, this last one, that if you haven't got it you can't give it to yourself.

From the very first lines the book is a kaleidoscope of sensations, of images, of figures; it is a continuous plunge, a waterfall that drags you along through the whole book. In some places the author's choices seem debatable, controversial, and yet some of them are choices that any one of us might have to make in life. Setting off, risking everything on some impossible overhanging face, alone, just for the pleasure of feeling alive again.

Behind Andy's wild-eyed gaze, however, there hides, in truth, a man like many others, with strengths and weaknesses, problems and easy roads... nothing different... just the desire to live life with an intensity beyond all measure...

Another portrait of big wall climbing is The Bird by Jim Bridwell.

Book details and who it is for

Psycho Vertical by Andy Kirkpatrick is published in Italy by Versante Sud, a publisher specialising in climbing and mountains, and comes with black and white photographs. It is an autobiographical account of big wall climbing and solo ascents, rather than a technical book.

We recommend it to those who climb and want to come to terms with the motivations, fears and contradictions of people who choose vertical adventure, but also to those who do not climb and are looking for a flowing, intense read. Do not expect practical information on routes or gear: at the centre of the book is the man. For another look at solo climbing, read the review of Nel vuoto. Solo in parete (Alone on the Wall).
