From the Lago della Provvidenza it is relatively simple to get to Rifugio Domenico Fioretti. The valley, a marvellous one, is tucked between the great bulk of Monte Corvo and the summits of the western chain of the Gran Sasso, and it gives moments of trekking and walks full of intense emotions.
The approach is a bit long: over 6 km of walking separate it from the lake. It is an ideal destination to walk to with children, since the climb is gentle and gradual and the height gain never really makes itself felt. The Rifugio Domenico Fioretti is strategically well placed, but to sleep there you need to ask for the keys at the numbers given below in this fact sheet.
What to know before you set off
Rifugio Domenico Fioretti is an unstaffed hut, open all year round, at an altitude of 1492 metres: there is no food service, so food, sleeping bag and everything you need for the night must be brought from home. There are 12 beds and a winter room; there is drinking water nearby. To spend the night in the locked part you first need to get hold of the keys: we recommend phoning well in advance and checking that the contacts given in the fact sheet are still valid.
The hut is an excellent base for climbing the summits of the western chain of the Gran Sasso that close off the valley: Monte Corvo, Cima Falasca, Cima del Venacquaro and the Sella del Malecoste.
