The Santuario della Madonna del Macereto

Redazione 15/08/2013 Reads: 1

A place to visit especially in the spring and summer season, when the colours of the Monti Sibillini reach their greatest splendour.

The Macereto sanctuary is an octagonal building built in 1529 over an earlier small church dating back to 1359. It stands on the Macereto plateau in a very panoramic position. The plateau lies at about 1000 metres, at the foot of Monte Rotondo (in the Monti Sibillini). The sanctuary is easily reached from Visso (10 km) and is often the destination of pilgrimages and spiritual retreats.

The Santuario della Madonna del Macereto is a truly enchanting place where you can withdraw in meditation during the summer months.

Not infrequently you'll find school groups, parish groups and families visiting.

Around Visso, on the road towards Cupi, you can also visit the little village of Cupi.

How to get there and what to see nearby

Coming from Terni you drive up the whole Valnerina to Visso. In the village you go round the block that acts as a roundabout and take the Strada Statale 209 towards Cupi; past Borgo Sant'Antonio, at the fork keep right and climb in wide bends onto the plateau, until the sanctuary appears in front of you.

If you're coming for a service or a retreat, it's a good idea to phone first to check times and opening, which can vary during the year. Carrying on past the sanctuary you reach Cupi and then the Lago di Fiastra: in a single day you can combine spirituality, villages and the landscapes of the Monti Sibillini National Park.
