Scialpinismo in Tirolo (Ski mountaineering in Tyrol)

Redazione 13/10/2011 Reads: 1

With this book a detailed window opens not only onto a vast ski mountaineering potential still little known to the Italian public, but also onto the society, the history and the most unusual features of Austrian Tyrol.

The systematic research, lasting three intense years in the valleys between Innsbruck and the Brenner, has taken shape in a guidebook that is truly lived. Every tour described here has in fact been repeated, photographed and described by the author himself. These pages concentrate a single direct experience, set up with a single yardstick by a single person.

Scialpinismo in Tirolo, a full 337 pages, 67 ski mountaineering routes, an outrageous quantity of wonderful photographs to complete the extensive descriptions, available in both Italian and English.
Undoubtedly the texts are the work of a man who is an expert not only in ski mountaineering but in the mountains as a whole: Roberto Iacopelli, a mountain guide from Bolzano, began climbing at a very young age, collecting well over a thousand different ascents in the Dolomites, his home mountains, and in the rest of the Alps, going through the experience of winter mountaineering and of solo climbs, and also opening a dozen new routes. He has written three guidebooks of selected climbs, now well known to the general public. His insatiable search for new spaces has led him this time to the Tyrolean lands.

Before any ski mountaineering tour it is useful to know how to read weather and snow bulletins.

For other tours on skis see the guidebook Scialpinismo in Lagorai e Cima d'Asta.

Who this book is for

The guidebook is aimed at ski mountaineers who are already independent and are looking for destinations other than the usual ones, in the valleys between Innsbruck and the Brenner, a short distance from the Italian border. Its strong point is consistency: all the routes have been skied and described by the same person, so the assessments can be compared with one another. The descriptions in Italian and English make it useful for mixed groups too, and the many colour photos help you get an idea of the slopes before setting off.

The volume is published by Versante Sud and came out in 2007: price and availability may have changed, so check them before buying. Every route must in any case be assessed according to the conditions of the moment; to understand the risks better, read what avalanches are and why they form.
