The Stazzo di Camporotondo (a stazzo is a shepherds' stone enclosure) lies in one of the most isolated places, far from the big hikes and the best-known routes; however, the state of upkeep and preservation of the building plainly shows that someone is clearly looking after it.
Located in the heart of the Monti Marsicani, the hut has what you need for a comfortable and safe stop, even in the winter months.
Not too hard to find, the hut is always open and can be used for long traverses, for example from Scanno to Pescasseroli. The route follows the dirt track that leads from Bocca Pantano (Passo Godi) to the Stazzo dello Zio Mas; you then go past it and at the next junction you go down to the right into the upper part of the Valle del Tasso, to climb quickly back out and regain height. After a short band of woodland you slowly climb the dirt track, which ends right in front of the Stazzo.
What to know before you set off
The stazzo is an unstaffed shelter, always open, with few beds and no water: bring all the supply you need, as well as a sleeping bag and food. Upkeep of the surrounding area and cleanliness have been judged poor, so don't expect well-kept paths on the last stretches, and leave the building cleaner than you found it.
Because the area is so isolated, it is a base suited to hikers with good route-finding skills, both for traverses and for ski touring in winter. Besides the approach from Passo Godi, one of the most frequented routes starts from Masseria Parenti. Also from Passo Godi starts the hike to the Ferroio di Scanno, useful for getting to know this sector of the Monti Marsicani.
