The Capanna di Sevice stands near the Sella dei Cavalli, at the end of the long gully that is the line of the direttissima (direct route) to Monte Sevice from Rosciolo dei Marsi.
It's an excellent reference point for hikers: during the staffed periods (essentially in summer) you can rest in the hut, eat a hot meal and spend the night on a camp bed.
During the winter closure it's still possible to ask for the key, by booking ahead, on 328-36.12.107 (Mr Idrofano Giuseppe) or 380.54.31.004 (G.E.V.), and in any case the small room with 2 camp beds stays open for sleeping in an emergency.
View towards the Val di Teve, which you can see a short distance from the hut; the hut itself, however, is tucked into a grassy hollow right at the foot of Monte Sevice and Monte Rozza.
To reach the summit from another side read the trip report Monte Sevice from Passo Le Forche.
What to know before you go
- Location: about 2119 metres, in the Velino group, reachable only on foot.
- Opening: staffed only in summer, with meals and 10 beds; in winter only the emergency room remains available.
- Water: there is no water at the hut. Bring enough from the valley floor, especially if you go up the long gully of the direttissima.
- Hikes: in a short time you reach Monte Rozza and the summit of the Sevice; with more effort the Costognillo, Monte Velino and the Cafornia.
The manager, contact details and arrangements for getting the key in winter may have changed: check them before you set off. If you want to link these summits in a single round you'll find ideas in the high traverse of Monte Velino.
