Not very well equipped, but if we like we can consider it a picnic area. Fonte della Moscosa lies at the end of a long mule track that is easy to walk. You need to walk for about 40 minutes to reach it, but it is an interesting place to take children to spend a completely carefree day.
It is not possible to light fires as there are no suitable facilities.
The appeal of this area lies in the nearby beech wood, which makes it ideal as a base for other interesting hikes in the area.
A short distance from the tables a spring (Fonte della Moscosa, in fact) usually has water all year round.
In winter the tables are completely buried under the snow, so there is no point relying on them after snowfall.
Getting there and what to know before you set off
From Rome you reach Filettino via Subiaco, Arcinazzo Romano and Trevi nel Lazio; past the village you climb towards the ski slopes of Campo Staffi and leave the car at the junction of Serra Valico S. Antonio, where the mule track starts. The area has 5 tables, there are no facilities for lighting fires and, according to the fact sheet, the water from the spring is not drinkable: bring enough to drink, especially with children.
The best season is spring, when the mule track is clear and the beech wood fills with green. Those who want to make a longer day of it will find more demanding routes in the Campo Staffi area, such as Monte Cotento from Campo Staffi. For an overview of the area read the fact sheet on the Monti Simbruini Regional Park.
