A handbook aimed at hikers and mountaineers that had long been missing from the publishing scene, a very useful tool for observing and understanding the physical landscape of the "high lands".
A careful, scientific analysis, the fruit of years of study, of professional work but above all of time spent in and exploring the Alps.
All of it reworked in a somewhat journalistic, popular key, through language and terminology that are at times for "insiders" but which, for the most part, remain understandable to everyone.
Sketches, drawings, diagrams and stereograms accompany this valuable handbook, together with dozens of explanatory photographs. The treatment is completed by a chapter devoted to the fascinating world of Alpine glaciers, to better understand their characteristics, their secrets, their future.
An opportunity not to be missed to make going to the mountains a reason for learning too, and not just a mere sporting gesture, at a time when man seems to have seriously compromised the fragile natural balance of our planet.
To apply these notions to Italy, read also the formation of the Italian mountains.
Who this handbook is for
The book by Paolo Barillà and Marco Blatto, published by Escursionista Editore and illustrated in colour, is designed for those who go to the mountains and want to understand what they are looking at: rocks, slopes, valleys and glacial landforms. The examples come mainly from the Alps, but the basic concepts apply to any range, the Apennines included.
It suits curious hikers and mountaineers even without a scientific background, as long as they are willing to tackle a few technical terms. We recommend reading it calmly at home and then trying to recognise the landforms described on the ground, during your own hikes. For an example applied to our mountains, see geography and landscape of a great Apennine massif.
