Lago Laudemio lies in a moraine basin formed in the Quaternary when, during the ice age, the Sirino mountain group was covered by glaciers that shaped its forms. Situated at 1525 m, the lake is not very large, barely 25 hectares; during the summer the lake loses a lot of water and becomes covered in algae.
To protect the lake, its flora and its fauna, the “Lago Laudemio Nature Reserve” of Lagonegro was set up in 1985. It in fact falls within today's Appennino Lucano National Park and Val d'Agri Lagonegrese.
On the shores of the lake we find beech (Fagus sylvatica) and alder (Alnus cordata), as well as various endemic plants such as “Vicia Sirinica” and “Astragalus Sirinicus”, “Astragalus semprevivens”. Among the animal species typical of the area are the spectacled salamander, the newt, the tawny owl and the middle spotted woodpecker. It is not hard to spot the honey buzzard too. The presence of the wolf has also been confirmed, and not infrequently its remains have been found, the result of poaching.
Lago Laudemio is not far from the car park of the Monte Sirino ski lifts; it is an easy outing that is really worth doing with the family or with friends, for a weekend of complete relaxation.
The lake is also the starting point for the climb to Monte del Papa by the normal route.
