Introduction: A route we tried out on a semi-night outing which, in winter conditions with a tramontana wind, lets you enjoy wonderful views with incredibly vivid colours. Because this ridge faces east you can watch sunsets in extremely saturated tones.

Route characteristics: The track is not well defined in its first part; higher up it is more marked and in any case follows the natural lines of the mountain. A route you can repeat in summer: without snow cover it is a not too demanding route for Escursionisti Esperti (EE, for experienced hikers), while in winter the ridge leading from the Terminilletto to Monte Terminillo can become treacherous with ice and with a slope angle that can reach 35-40°.

The hut of reference along the route is the Rifugio Massimo Rinaldi on Monte Terminilletto.

Route description

Summer route assessment: the route we suggest is markedly different depending on whether you do it in summer or in winter. When there is no snow cover, reaching Monte Terminillo from Località Rialto is one of the classic ascents of the central Apennines. Not too demanding.
You leave the car at the chairlift (or near the residential buildings), then enter the valley between Monte Terminilluccio and the Terminilletto. In this first stretch there are no very obvious signs of a path. Once at the saddle (here clear signs of a path start to appear) you carry on until you meet the ridge of the Terminilletto. You follow the ridge until you reach the obvious Rifugio Massimo Rinaldi. You gain about 450 metres of height in just a kilometre and a half. Here you can allow yourself a rest, using the shade of the hut or its shelter from the wind. To reach the hut from the car park allow about 1 hour 30 minutes (1h 45m for the less fit). So you set off 1 hour 30 before dawn, covering this part of the route in the dark with a head torch or relying on the glow of a full moon.
Once at Rifugio Massimo Rinaldi you wait for the dawn, which in good weather gives colours ranging from orange to pink to violet, and the obvious blue variations of the sky.
From the hut you continue along the ridge heading north. Here the path is very obvious; in some stretches you need to use your hands to find better balance at the points where it drops slightly. The route bends east and descends along the ridge to the saddle that marks the Valle del Sole. The Valle del Sole is an escape route for the return, or in case a sudden change in the weather forces a retreat. From here you climb back up over rocky slopes. Here too you will need to use your hands to get past two points that are not dangerous but tricky because of small steps of broken rock.
The last stretch is a gradual climb to the summit of Monte Terminillo. You can return by the same route, or by descending to the Valle del Sole saddle and then following the fall line of the Valle del Sole.

While the summer route is accessible to young hikers too, the same route with snow cover or ice is not recommended for inexperienced or very young hikers.

Winter route assessment:
In winter you do the route without being able to see the path, but you follow the very clear line of the ridge. Coming down from the Terminilletto you move mainly on the southern side, that is, the upper part of the Valle del Sole. The icy slope can be rather treacherous. The snow that thaws during the day freezes at night and becomes extremely slippery. This is perhaps the passage where you need to move with the greatest caution. A fall on this side is not necessarily fatal, but remember that grazes on ice can hurt a great deal.
From the Valle del Sole saddle you climb a short passage where crampons and ice axe are compulsory. The slope angle eases off up to the trig point on the summit of Monte Terminillo.
This winter route, done at night, can be tackled with a simple head torch that lets you see the slope perfectly well. Even the darkest night is never completely dark and it's hard to get lost. You climb the valley along its fall line up to the saddle. Setting off an hour and a half early you can enjoy the dawn light right on the summit of Monte Terminilletto. An experience we absolutely recommend.

Variants and alternatives

On the way back you can descend by the Valle del Sole, a descent that, if done with crampons and ice axe, is completely free of danger. This variant greatly reduces the effort of retracing the ridge to the Terminilletto. At the bottom of the Valle del Sole you pick up the road leading south-west towards Località Rialto, where we left the car.

Notes on effort and difficulty

Height gain and length make it a route of medium effort, accessible in summer to young hikers too. The same route in winter and with substantial snow cover is not recommended for unequipped and inexperienced hikers.

Frequently asked questions

Can you climb Monte Terminillo from Rialto with youngsters?

In summer, without snow, the route requires medium effort and is suitable for young hikers from the 8-10 age band too. In winter the ridge from the Terminilletto to the Terminillo can be icy, with slopes of up to 35-40 degrees.

How long does the hike to the Terminillo from Località Rialto take?

The round trip takes about 6 hours, with about 600 m of total ascent. On the way down you can choose the Valle del Sole, which in winter must be tackled with crampons and ice axe and saves you retracing the Terminilletto ridge.
