The mountains of the Apennines are made for hiking. What is hiking? It's discovery, an alternative to plain tourism, hiking as a sport. No sporting activity has ever had as many countless facets as hiking. Discovering these facets is already a journey in itself.
Why another hiking manual, why a printed version?
When I started getting hooked on the mountains in 2003 I often surfed the internet looking for information on how you go to the mountains. Back then I couldn't find much material. So, not having time to attend hiking and mountain courses, I had to build up my own personal knowledge, buying books and reading information wherever I happened to find it. I was a sponge, but putting all those notions into practice took years of real experience.
Only now, after almost ten years of mountains, can I say I have a barely sufficient knowledge of the mountain environment and of how you tackle long and demanding hikes.
This manual in no way wants to replace a good course alongside an instructor, which I recommend everyone attend at least once.
The aim of this manual, written in simple and direct language, is rather to be a first step towards getting familiar with all the main topics of interest to the hiker and the mountain-goer.
This practical manual gathers the essential information you need to get ready to visit the wonderful mountains of the Apennines in complete safety. It was put together from the practical experience built up within the Gruppo Escursionistico Aria Sottile. The contents, taken from the website www.ariasottile.net, have been revised, expanded and improved. The readability and the common thread running through the topics have been improved.
Tips have been added and the graphics refined for quicker reading.
