There are magical places that we pass by almost without noticing. Prato Agabito is a picnic area almost invisible to tourists: you really have to know it to find it, since, what's more, it is really badly signposted.
We can easily imagine how this area risks, more often than not, going unnoticed by the people who frequent Campo Felice.
The natural environment is made up of the dominant presence of centuries-old beeches with trunks twisted by the hardships of winter, and young beeches with incredibly sharp streaks.
The tables, as often happens in these picnic areas, are set under the branches of the tall beeches, which in summer bring a very pleasant coolness. The wooden structures at the moment (2011) still seem to us to be in excellent condition, although we got the impression, here too, that there was little maintenance. A wide meadow without stones can be an interesting attraction for children, who can play happily without too much risk of tripping.
There are numerous stone barbecue spots for lighting fires and roasting sausages. Water available (presumably not drinkable) and nearby a hut, unstaffed and also closed.
The area is decidedly interesting also for its endless hiking possibilities. In particular the network of paths in the area lets you reach, with a little effort, the Cerasolo meadows, where along the path you can come across marvellous specimens of beeches well over a hundred years old.

- Getting there
- From L'Aquila, without going on the A2 motorway, you climb up to Lucoli on the S.S. 584 as far as Casamaina. You go over the Valico "La Crocetta", then at the junction of the Vecchia Miniera you carry on to the right for the Valico della Chiesola. Shortly after the pass, at a parking area on dirt ground, we leave the car. Coming by the A24 motorway (from Rome or from Teramo) you take the Tornimparte exit to climb directly to Campo Felice. Before reaching the Valico della Chiesola we pick out the parking area on dirt ground thanks to a rather battered wooden sign that marks the Prato Agapito Picnic Area (hard to see from the road: pay attention).
