A hut owned by the Associazione Nazionale Alpini (the Italian Alpine Troops Association), it is an aesthetically rather uninteresting building put up in 1973, with a bar, a restaurant with a big fireplace, and small bedrooms. It has 37 beds split across 5 rooms of different sizes, as follows: 2-4-8-10-13 beds each.
During the year it is open on Sundays, public holidays and the days before them, while in the summer period (15 June - 15 September) it is open every day.
Run by Gino Quattrociocchi and Barbara Fiori, who appreciate a phone call if you decide to sleep at the hut.
Our verdict:
Excellent strategic position, not only for the hike to Monte Vettore (a hike that can also be done in a single day) but also for the chance of a long and very panoramic traverse from Forca di Presta to Forca Canapine. It is the ideal base for visiting the less frequented areas of the Monti Sibillini park.
What to know before you go
The hut stands at 1560 metres on the Monti Sibillini, on the pass of Forca di Presta. It offers meals and drinking water, but the fact sheet notes that the menu is not based on local produce. The information on opening and management dates from when the article was written, and the fact sheet gives summer-only opening: before setting off, and above all if you want to sleep there, we recommend phoning to check that it is open and who is running it. The Sibillini area was hit hard by the earthquakes, and roads and buildings may have changed.
The normal route to Monte Vettore starts here, described in the trip report Monte Vettore from Forca di Presta. Those who choose the traverse to Forca Canapine can stop at the end at Rifugio Perugia.
