Rifugio Fonte Astuni and the Fonte Astuni spring

In the living heart of the Vallelonga, one of the most beautiful valleys of the Abruzzo Apennines, the hut enjoys a highly respectable position, strategic for organising hikes.

The hut is not normally open or staffed, but you can ask for the keys at the Residence Vallelonga.

From the village of Villa Vallelonga you carry on along the tarmac road; you pass first the Chiesetta della Madonna della Lanna and then the Fonte di Valle Fossato. After a couple of gentle bends you come close to a gravel track where there are some signs; you follow the drivable gravel track to the hut (on foot if possible). No particular difficulty in finding your way.

From the hut you can set off on the hike to Monte Cornacchia.

What to know before you go

  • Type of building: an unstaffed hut but usable all year round, at about 1200 metres, with 14 beds. There are no meals: food and everything you need for cooking must be brought from home.
  • Water: there is some, but it isn't drinkable. Bring your own supply or a way of purifying it.
  • Condition: in our fact sheet the building is listed as in excellent condition, with good cleanliness and good upkeep of the surroundings.
  • Surroundings: besides the climb up Monte Cornacchia, an easier destination is the Chiesetta della Madonna della Lanna.

For the keys you need to arrange things with the Residence Vallelonga: contact details and arrangements may change, so check them before you set off. The valley is part of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, whose rules are worth knowing before your visit.
