Here is a publisher that has chosen to invest in quality, in the human being, in the added value of a book written with feeling, in deep communion with the world of the mountains.
What you find in your hands is a book of ordinary format; on the face of it, it looks like a book. The cover is glossy, with a drawing of some tree trunks. Its physical weight is considerable, strange... after all it isn't too big a book. Then I open it and understand. The quality of the paper is remarkable and the reason is simple.
The book is a hymn to poetry, to imagination, to sensitive compassion. Overwhelmed by this surprise, I close it again to savour it at leisure.
When I pick it up again I choose a few pages at random to read. If appearances had deceived me into believing I had a book in my hands... well, now I know that this is the entire spirit of its author.
There are drawings everywhere; the book is overflowing with passion for trees, nature, life! The line is wonderful, shifting, sure of itself. Here Indian ink, there a chalk, a watercolour, or perhaps a felt-tip pen used ad hoc.
A deep vein of wisdom runs among the sinuous coils of the trunks; it is the wisdom of someone who has been able to stand watching for hours, or keep still, listening to the patience of the wood and its eloquent silence.
Trees - writes the author - are a bridge between earth and the infinite. “Drawing trees led me to verticality: with my eyes I followed the wrinkles of life on the trunk up to the sky, then with my pencil I told the story of this bridge between earth and infinity, and every solitary tree offered itself to my climbing.”
Never was there a book so... mountain-like as this one, full of a soothing humility, of an irrepressible joy in existing, at times marked by such a natural autumnal melancholy.
The author's drawings alternate with a great many quotations from famous authors on the subject of trees; these enrich the reading, making it a book as suited to simple reading as it is to short meditations or long spiritual exercises.
