A winter snowshoe hike towards Monte Cagno, between Campo Felice and the Altopiano delle Rocche, on 3 February 2019, told in pictures.
We set off at 5.20 in the morning, with sleet and then clear skies as forecast. From Forca Miccia we climb the spurs of Monte Cefalone along the snowy dirt track, but the snow is heavy and layered: the snowshoes sink, one breaks and then the second one too. In three hours we are in the Settacque valley, at 1910 metres, on a rocky ridge that looks like the back of a dragon asleep under the snow.
Monte Cagno is still two kilometres away and we decide to go down. This is not the story of conquering a summit: it is the story of two friends who brought me back to the mountains.
Before a snowshoe hike, always check the snow and avalanche bulletin.
