On the road that leads from Cupi to the Lago di Fiastra, the little village of Fiastra keeps a small treasure surrounded by greenery. Now in ruins, the Castello di Fiastra is recorded as having been built as early as before the ninth century. Having become the property of the Magalotti in 1259, it consisted of 7 towers and a rounded keep.
It is a structure that was handed over to the Comune of Camerino in 1259. Imposing, it covered an area of 21,000 m² and was surrounded by 580 metres of walls.
Not much of this structure remains, but it is still possible to rediscover its foundations and towers.
On the ruins of the castle stands the Romanesque church of San Paolo, dating from 1231.
The whole complex is worth seeing: reaching it by a gently climbing tarmac road brings us out onto a truly wonderful balcony over the Lago di Fiastra.
How to plan your visit
Access to the ruins is free and you can wander at leisure among the remains of the fortification. As well as the foundations and the remains of the towers, the Romanesque church of San Paolo, built on top of the castle, deserves a stop. The finest spot is still the viewpoint over the lake, ideal for a photo on clear days.
The visit doesn't take long and combines well with other nearby places in the Maceratese: the Lago di Fiastra, the little village of Cupi and the Santuario della Madonna del Macereto, all along the same road. With a few more stops you can easily put together a whole day on the edge of the Monti Sibillini.
