On the northern edge of the Monti Sibillini National Park, set among the hills of the Marche, lies Lago di Fiastra, an artificial reservoir that fits well into the landscape, adding something that in fact does not make it seem so alien to its surroundings. Like many natural attractions in this area, it is not the easiest place to reach. It is worth a hiking visit for the strong charm of these low hills, for the lush green nature and the particular colour of the waters of this lake.
From Visso you take the S.S. 209 as far as the turn-off for the Santuario della Madonna del Macereto. Past the sanctuary, carry on towards Cupi. Past the small, rather deserted village you soon reach a junction where you turn right, continuing to Fiastra, which stands out on the heights with an interesting panoramic view over the lake.
Near the lake you can also stop at the Parco Avventura del Lago di Fiastra (adventure park) or carry on along the route that follows the Strada Provinciale 91 along the shore of the lake.
The three hikes of greatest naturalistic interest in the area are:
- Hike to the erosion badlands (calanchi) of Lame Rosse;
- Visit to the ruins of the old Castello dei Conti Magalotti of Fiastra and of the small Romanesque church (1231) of San Paolo;
- Hike along the Gole del Fiastrone.
How to plan a day at the lake
The lake lends itself to a day that combines short walks and visits. Nature lovers can choose between the erosion badlands and the Gole del Fiastrone, the two most interesting hikes in the area; those who prefer something quieter can follow the provincial road along the shore, climb up to the ruins of the Castello dei Magalotti di Fiastra for the view from above, or stop at the adventure park with the children.
The journey itself is part of the trip: the road from Visso crosses the Macereto plateau and the village of Cupi, two stops we recommend you don't skip. To set the lake in its territory, also read the fact sheet on the Monti Sibillini National Park.
